Orris root

The most precious material in our atelier: iris roots dried for three years until they smell of violets and suede.

Family
Powdery floral
What we use
The root of the iris, dried for three years
Harvest
Harvested in July

What it smells like

  • Violets and face powder
  • Soft suede
  • Damp earth and carrots
Purple bearded irises with dew in a field at dawn, peeled orris roots drying on linen in front.

Orris is not the iris flower but its root. Farmers near Florence lift the roots every third summer, peel them by hand and leave them to dry for three years, while the violet scent slowly develops.

It takes about a ton of roots to make two kilos of orris butter, which is why it costs more than gold. It is the heart of Iris Hour.
