The old southern magnolias in the Garden District open their flowers in May, and on warm nights the whole street smells of lemon, cream and something darker.

Magnolia Noir is that night: magnolia and jasmine at the heart, ripe plum on top, and a base of sandalwood and benzoin that lasts until morning.
